I was disqualified from driving in December. I received a 18 month ban for being over the limit. I haven’t told my employer. I am a civil servant. I checked and there is a clause in a document called ‘standard of conduct’ that I must tell them if I get disqualified. I’ve been in denial about this and I am worried about the consequences of failing to tell them. Driving has nothing to do with my job, but the circumstances in which I was arrested don’t look good. I have since given up alcohol and trying to put my life back together. But I’m unsure how to proceed with work. If I continue to hide it, what are the consequences likely to be if I am found out? Is it something I could be dismissed for? Would it have an impact on my pension? Thanks.

My view is, however hard, honesty is the best policy.
If your employer has a clause about standard of conduct and even if driving is not part of your role but you are supposed to inform of a disqualification then if they find out and you have not told them the consequences could be worse.
One thing I would ask you is to check the disciplinary policy and look at the examples given of what is viewed as gross misconduct. If your situation is covered or something along similar lines e.g. dishonesty then potentially if they did find out they may have grounds to dismiss you for not informing them.
In terms of going to them now after 3 months, then you can explain what you have been doing in your life to try and recover from what put you in the position of getting the disqualifcation and part of that has been coming to terms with the situation and coping with your concerns over the impact on your job given that driving is not a part of your role.
Ultimately it is up to you to decide and depending on what that is, hope that they do not find out or that if you do let them know the consequences will not be too severe for you.If you would like a one-to-one expert consultation with me on your employment issue than I can be contacted by emailing admin@legalbeaglesgroup.com
