My girlfriends son has been made to work late shifts now from 6pm until 10pm as the retail outlet he works at has now extended their opening times. He doesn't have a problem with this, now the last 2 evenings he's worked until 9pm and has then been sent home, 1 occasion was because the forklift broke and the 2nd was because the tail lift broke on the delivery truck but his employer has said that because they didn't do the full 4 hour shift they will not be getting paid, they were still doing other work and not sitting around drinking tea for those 3 hours, so surely this is illegal? He's 22 in case anyone asks. Anything he can do?

I presume that he has a contract of employment?
