  • Redundancy guidelines (time period)

    A friend of mine works for a large supermarket chain. Today she was told that she had the option to either reduce her hours down to 16 hours a week including changing the days she currently works or be made redundant. She was told she only had until tomorrow to make this decision, to me this seems like it is not a legal time period and she should be provided a longer period of time to make this decision. Anyone know anything about this. Thanks.

    Hi, sorry to hear about your friend. Is this only affecting her or others as well? How long has she been employed at the supermarket?

    What should happen is that they start a redundancy consultation process with her and one of the "suitable alternative positions" that they offer is this one on reduce hours. It would then be her decision as to whether she accepts it is a suitable alternative but not at a days notice.

    I appreciate the unprecedented situation we are all facing at the moment but that does not negate proper employment practices being adhered to.*
