  • Boss keeps shouting and swearing at employees

    Hi.
I've been working in an office for a month, and in that time the boss has shouted at 3 members of staff. He shuts his glass office door but of course everyone can hear and see everything, and pretends not to listen while the morale plummets.* One of the people he shouted at handed in her notice shortly after and didn't turn up to work out her notice - I can't say I blame her. The boss shouted at a new member of staff yesterday, bellowing things like "I'm so f**ing disappointed in you!" and "I've f**ing told you how to do it! Why the f**k aren't you listening!", while thumping his desk repeatedly so that the sound reverberated* throughout the whole office. I think it's only a matter of time before this new emploee walks as well. Before I started working there, the boss lost an entire team and they all badmouthed him on the internet. My question is, could any of these employees have any recourse for his volatile and unpleasant behaviour? Could they take him to a tribunal? I'm very new to my role as office manager and, although there's not much I can do about his behaviour, I feel I should be aware of things like this. Can anyone help?

If staff wish to complain about the behaviour of a manager and they decide to follow an internal procedure then they would need to raise a grievance.

If the individual just decided to resign then unless they had two years service (except in the cases of discrimination) they would not be able to bring an Employment Tribunal (ET) claim.* If they did bring a claim then it would be for constructive dismissal i.e. that the employer has behaved to badly that is fundamentally undermines the employment relationship and makes it untenable for the person to continue working at the company.

At the heart of this it sounds like it is the boss that needs to spoken to about his management and people skills.*

    Hope that helps.*

Who is his boss - perhaps he/she needs to be made aware of this.
