  • Forced to be a manager

    Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone can provide some insight on this one.

I work in a company which has had loads of managers resign in the past few months, instead of hiring new mangers to replace those who left, the company conveniently started assigning one by one all managers tasks to my team, which is a training department.

    These tasks include:

    - Speaking with customers that ask to talk with a manager
    - Being in charge of all customer service representatives as the only senior staff on duty across multiple offices
    - Assign tasks to customer service representatives
    - Hold formal meetings, including meetings that lead to dismissal, with customer service representatives
    - And last but certainly not least, hold the absence phone line, which means having access to all employees personal data including lateness and sickness details

I have already expressed my concerns on the matter to no avail. So I am wondering is this process even legal? Especially the last two points of this list, my contract lists I may be asked to do other tasks to support the business, but is it correct that I am basically forced to be a manager in charge of other employees?

    Thanks

It depends on whether the additional tasks you are being asked to go seem to becoming a permanent part of your job or whether they are intended for a short period of time in which case they can be considered as being "asked to do other tasks to support the business".

You say the tasks are being assigned to your team so are the responsibilities being "spread over" a number of people?
