  • Job References

I was recently terminated from my job because of an error in judgement I made in regard to GDPR after 14 years service. At the time I had several health issues and the grievance that made me commit the error was given in confidence to my line manager in what I believed to be unfair bonus practices in the business. Now I want to move on and look for new jobs, but obviously, references are a big concern. I have an email from our HR Manager and again verbal confirmation in front of a disciplinary panel that the company as a standard only gives out Job Title and Dates Worked for reference requests, so I don't have to worry. Do I have any legal recourse if they go back on this?

It is not unheard of that company’s confine their ex-employee references to the very basic as your ex-employer has indicated or purely factual information i.e. how may days has the person had off in the last 12 months. If you have had the assurances that this will be the case in your situation then I suggest there is no need to worry yourself at the moment.

If they did go back on this then yes, there could be some options you may consider but it would depend on the nature of the "bad" "unhelpful" reference as to the kind action you may be able to take.

If you would like a one-to-one expert consultation with me on your employment issue than I can be contacted by emailing admin@legalbeaglesgroup.com

I do not provide advice by PM although I may on occasion ask you to send me documents this way but any related advice will be provided back on your thread.

I do my best to provide good practical advice, however I do so without liability.
If you have any doubts then do please seek professional legal advice.
