  • Bank employee

My husband works for a bank and has been interviewed today by their Investigation Unit because he has made several direct debit indemnity claims on his personal bank account. Could this be construed as gross misconduct and result in dismissal?

This must be very worrying for you. Hopefully, the bank is entirely satisfied with his explanation.

I assume that it's normal practice for banks to interview employees suspected of any criminal activity, even if it's unconnected with their employment. Likewise, certain other matters without a hint of dishonesty, such as personal bankruptcy or even expressing the wrong views on Twitter, could result in dismissal from some jobs.

He has not been suspended and is not sure if a disciplinary will follow.

Hopefully the explanation your husband gave will prove satisfactory.

His bank is likely to have a disciplinary policy which may give examples of what they consider gross misconduct which may help. If the bank was to start a disciplinary process they would have to write to him and in the correspondence they would need to indicate what action they might take if they were to discipline him.

However please try not to worry as there may be no further action taken.
