  • Apprentice being asked to pay back wages

I have recently handed in my notice whilst still on my apprenticeship, which I started in January. The first thing my employers said to me is that I'd have to pay back the wages I have received whilst I was attending college.

I did sign an agreement with the company but I didn't receive a copy of it, but from what can remember is that I had to pay back 100% of a fee (£7000) after I had completed my 2 year course if I left within a year. I contacted my apprenticeship provider and was told that they would have be given a government grant of around £6,500 which would of nearly covered the whole fee.
I'm wondering if anyone could give any advice on my situation.

    thanks

First ask for a copy of the agreement that you signed.

Would it not of been a legal requirement to have given me a copy in the first place

By the way even in the 50/60s unless a company agrees to release you from apprenticeships then cost were made against you, luckily a store director of a company released me without payment as I was joining up!
