Gosh, this brings back memories! We used to grow potatoes for home use (about 1 acre) and I hated having to pick them. Child labour was quite acceptable when it was your own and from a very early age I remember the dirt and back ache. Then they went into what was called a potato pit -spuds layered with earth and straw and we would have to dig them out as they were required.
Having said that; when my nieces and nephews were young their parents got them to help plant and harvest fruit and veg and because they helped produce it they ate everything!
Still can’t bear the thoughts of digging out spuds though.
If I was living in America could I sue my parents for cruelty? Is it any wonder I’m damaged!

Dig straight, shallow trenches, 2 to 3 feet apart, in prepared soil. Plant seed potatoes 12 inches apart and cover with about 3 inches of soil. When the shoots reach 10 to 12 inches tall, use a hoe or shovel to scoop soil from between rows and mound it against the plants, burying the stems halfway.
