  • Not allowed to arrange college due to disability

My wife is enrolled on and half way through a part time college course. One of her carers was on the course but has had to drop out. My wife needs simple adjustments such as things like her bags passed to her and her wheelchair pushed 7n and out of class. Classmates happy to do it. Course tutor says they can't do this due to health and safety and therefore my wife can no longer attend. We suggested an honorary contract so anyone pushing her etc would be covered by our insurance. Course lead says no. Course lead is quality officer, for the college, BTW. Help, please!

Sorry I have only just read this and I am totally disgusted!

This is direct discrimination against your wife and is totally illegal.

I would suggest a letter to the Dean of the college reminding them that reasonable adjustments are a legal requirement, and that teachers have vicarious insurance under the college's public liability insurance so this is NOT an issue.

Ask if an able bodied person dropped something and someone picked it up for them, would this be a health and safety issue, and if a mum with a baby in a pram asked someone to move the pram would it be the same, if not than why is your wife being targeted?
