Hi I was caught lifting in Boots and they found items from M and S. The RLP security staff took the goods after running after me after I left the store and then retrieved the goods when I was called back in.

I know I am due a fine soon.. if I don't pay as you suggest will they send bayliffs to my door? I still live with my parents and don't want them to know.



Also Boots took my advantage card but can see they haven't cancelled it so I have ordered another.

As indicated you will receive four or five letters.
If you approach them in an attempt to negotiate a lower payment, they will redouble their efforts to squeeze money out of you.

As far as I can see your options are
1) to pay
2) not to pay and tell your mother it is none of her business
3) not to pay and discuss it sensibly with your mother
4) not to pay and race your mother to the post so she doesn't see the RLP letters.

Please try and put this incident into perspective.
It isn't the crime of the century and is a very minor matter.
RLP cause enormouse stress, as you are discovering, and IMO the best way of dealing with it is by being upfront.
A little unpleasantness with your mother is surely worthwhile just to relieve the stress?
After all, what will your mother do?
And if you explain it to her why will she be upset you have not paid?

RLP are the cause of much needless upset and should be closed down.
Their way of working is utterly despicable.

As per [MENTION=49370]Kati[/MENTION] why try to negotiate when you owe nothing.
They are so toothless, that when they get to the end of their letter series they often request a reduced payment "to settle without the need for court action"
What they really mean is "this is a final begging letter as we are so toothless"!

She is concerned it will go on house records and effect insurance etc.

NOTHING that rlp can do will affect your mothers insurance premiums/credit record, it will not affect yours either (the only way it could affect you in any way is if you were taken to court and lost - which would have to be done by Boots or M&S not rlp. They will not take this further as they have passed it on to rlp and have effectively washed their hands of it!)

why negotiate with them?? you owe them nothing!!

If your mother has already seen RLP's envelope, and has guessed what it concerns, why not discuss it with her, and explain that in this country we have civil and criminal courts that deal with justice?
We have no need for self appointed vigilantes to run a third form of (in)justice!

Hi at des8, I'm actually older than 21, but still live at home. If I don't pay more letters will come and she will question why I haven't paid.

Do you have a contact line?

The option I thought was to ring as they this person no longer lives here and has not done so for months.

That letter is standard fare from RLP, and should be given the attention it deserves,i.e. IGNORE.
If you write to them for any reason they take it as encouragement to redouble their efforts,

It is designed solely to threaten vulnerable people into paying their trumped up charges.
For example: In their second paragraph they mention you exceeded your licence to enter the shop by attempting to steal, and so you become a trespasser.... SO WHAT?
Trespass is a minor civil offence, nowhere near as serious as theft, so why mention it?
Solely to frighten and baffle.
That is how they operate.

I don't know how old you are, but as you are living at home it may be that you are still a minor.
If that is the case and RLP know your age, they may write to your parents under the guise of concern for your wellbeing, but really to put pressure on them to paytheir charge!
I only mention this because you say you could not discuss the incident with your mother, but it could be she'll find out from RLP.
I would hope that once she was over the initial shock she would be supportive of you.
