  • Shoplifting- HELP!

    Hello there,

I am in need of some advice. Recently, I had taken a bedset and some Pj's from Primark. I am a student who cannot afford university at all and am over my overdraft completely, meaning that I do not have much money. I do work alongside university and it is safe to say that I am deeply ashamed of what I did. I am a law student myself and fully understand what I did was wrong and having very little money is not an excuse for my behaviour.

On leaving the store, I was stopped by security and was asked to the back of the store. They then asked me to recover the items (which I had), and then they took some details including my name, address and date of birth. I was then told that I would receive a fine from the store via the post and that this needed to be paid. I was then let go and the Police had no participation in this at all. I am now banned from the store for a year.

I do not know what to do. The reason for my petty behaviour was due to poor finances in the first place, and I now cannot afford to pay the fine. What should I do?

    Kind Regards.

It is not a fine - Look up many posts on RLP on this forum.

Ignore the many letters is usual advice.

Shoplifting and a law student - can ruin your career prospects.

Hi LucyWatson & welcome to LB.

There wouldn't be a fine, it is a civil matter.
& as a law student, you might like to examine the ratio in the attached case.
Not a precedent, but I'm told it is very persuasive.

        Yep
All you have to do is NOTHING!
Just do not venture into Primark for one year, and do ignore the series of begging letters you will receive from RLP
And get on wth your studies!

I am here to say a HI to all

...and it would be disrespectful to ignore on what has been asked in here
My honest suggestion is to seek a legal advice from any of the solicitors.

          Thanks

            Hi & welcome to LB.
It is, of course, a wise idea to seek alternative views, including those of legal professionals.
Legal Beagles does have a companion site, LB Compare (link in the blue banner at te top of this thread), or the OP could contact their local CAB/Law Center.
