Re: Caught shoplifting - Help please

    Hello Ostell,

Thank you for your reply and answer.
I do consider it is a privilege to study in this country, and I've enjoyed very much the learning and cultural experience.
With all my respect to the culture and people, prior to this misconduct, I have always disciplined myself to behave more socially and morally responsible.
This lesson has learnt and reminded me greatly about honesty. Truly.
However, I wonder, in the case like this, when I was told that information will still be passed to the police force, was that meant to be a warning or scared tactics? In this case that the police call was cancelled and never turnt up, as you have said that no detrimental record was registered, should I consider this as a chance that the shop detector came around to offer me? Can I put my mind at ease that I should not have to expect any contact from the police?

Re: Caught shoplifting - Help please

Firstly I doubt there will be any consequences other than RLP's fatuous demands, which you ignore.
Rlp normally ask for £150 to £200, but that is when much smaller amounts are involved.

How do any of the retailers implement a ban? If you are recognised in their store they will escort you out.
In practice you only need to avoid the store where you might be recognised, at least for a little while.

I wouldn't bother appeallng to Waitrose.. just get on with your life.

At sometime or other we all do things with hindsight we realise were stupid.
Sometimes there are repercussions and we wish....
In the grand scheme of things this was a very minor matter and you should not allow it to dominate the rest of your life.

      Happy christmas

        To des8,

Thank you for your kind words and patience to explian.
By luck, I was also passed on some information that was shared by a solicitor, and her opinion is in line with what you have contributed.
I should be able to feel more at ease now for Christmas.
Should I receive more documents from RLP, may I bring them here to ask for your opinion?

        Thank you very much.

Re: Caught shoplifting - Help please

            To des8 and ostell,

Thank you both for your advice before Christmas, I was much more comforted after having your confirmation.

To give you an update, it was at Waitrose, where I failed to pay all items I had in my shopping basket after I found out that the new self-check out machine wasn't installed with a scale to measure every scanned items in bagging areas. I thought there was a fault in the system, and no assistant was alerted, so I walked away thinking I was lucky. It was a foolish conduct, and I do feel guilty to have not been completely honest to pay all items I put in the bagging area. When I was about to leave the shop, I was stopped and taken to their security room. I offered to pay the shopping in full, including any compensation, but it was rejected. After the instance took place, I was held for 2 hours, but the police were NOT there nor anyone to investigate me. I was let go with a safety guard and a ban from the shop.

Today I've received a letter before claim from RLP today.
I am very happy to provide the picture of the original document through private message or email contact if you let me know how I can do this.
The first thing I have noticed is that they have spelled my name wrong.
I was prepared to pay the fine if it was between 80-100 pounds, because all items (xmas gift set) were returned in tact without any damage, and I was held in a staff room, where they were having their regular chats and no additional investigation took place. RLP has calculated the fine is to be 197.50 pound.
Could you give me some advice? Should I ignore this letter?

Many thanks for your attention on this again!

Re: Caught shoplifting - Help please

no fine they are not able to fine you = it is a begging letter only - ignore - speculative invoice. know what I would use it for, in case of emergency flush away after use.

Re: Caught shoplifting - Help please

                As above, just ignore them.
There's no need to pm me a copy of the letter, on here we have all seen them too often.

It isn't actually a "letter before claim" as it doesn't comply with the required protocols.
It is just the first letter of a series to pressure you into donating to RLP's profits

                  Hello both,

Thank you both for your input, and I've taken your advice to ignore. As you both predicated, I received another letter today. However, I was surprised to read the letter starts like this, "We write further to our previous letter. It appears that you been seeking advice from online forums. Please be aware that this does not assist because it doesn't address the facts of this particular case."
I wonder how did they gather this information? It reads like a threat, and I am not very comfortable with their speculation.
Could you suggest what I should do? Sorry if this is another repeated question, but I was asked to reply within 7 days if Civil Court action is to be avoided.
Many thanks for your reply in advance. Take care.

From what I've been reading recently, this is becoming a common occurrence in RLP letters (so many people use forums such as LB now that they are beginning to think everyone does :lol
