  • RLP Letter before claim letter

    Hello,
I’ve been involved in a shoplifting event at Primark stores few weeks ago, which I truly regret. Not sure what was going thru my mind that I happened to do that, the items were around £25 worth which they all got it back. They just took some details and let me go. Now, received a letter from RLP demanding £175 which I find really unfair. Their claim that so much time was wasted due to the incident and the resources were diverted coz of this is just ridiculous, they were doing their job as usual and the manager of the shop just came to pick up the items and left. Moreover, the security staffs were from the shopping centre, not from Primark. However, I feel I have to take some responsibility for my action and I am ready to pay some amount, let’s say around £75 which I feel is reasonable. So, how do I go about it? Could someone help me to write a letter/email mentioning the important bits and a willingness to pay £75? I guess they will reject it but is it worth a try? Having seen other threads, they seem to decrease the claim amount when they receive no response. Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

If you are feeling guilty and want to make some sort of gesture, make a donation to a charity.

Giving money to firms like RLP only pays for them to harass further victims.
They have no right to any money at all, but act as vigilantes hiding behind a façade of legalese

The advice you will receive here (and from other forums) is to ignore them

You've got this in a 'nutshell', 'Their claim that so much time was wasted due to the incident and the resources were diverted coz of this is just ridiculous, they were doing their job as usual and the manager of the shop just came to pick up the items and left.'

What they have sent is a speculative invoice, it has no genuine breakdown of costs, because the costs are accounted for in their 'Business Model. The costs are the same regardless of what they are alleging you did, there is no stock loss. They will no doubt send more letters, each one more extreme, possibly claiming the coming of the 'next ice age'.

If you are struggling financially, there is help out there.

      Heed Des's advice.

        Dear senior members,
I just wanted to clarify that when they say I may be liable to pay for their legal and other costs if it goes to court, is that just a hoax? Can they claim those if it goes to the court? I’m not sure how many cases, if any, were taken to the court and the outcome of any case. I have received my 2nd letter and guess the third is on the way. Thanks.

It will not go to court, and even if it did the costs they could recover from you (only if they won) are very limited
