  • Help! Friend caught shoplifting and now I’M banned from ASDA

Friend caught shoplifting a small bottle of booze, whilst I’m in the area. Security come to talk to him and get the bottle back, see me at the end of the aisle and escort us out of the store, stating that we’re both banned.

They did not take our names, is it safe to return? Any course of action I should take?

I need to shop at ASDA, otherwise it is hugely inconvenient!

The reason why they banned you does not matter. They are perfectly entitled to ban you without any good reason (as long as they don't do so on any of the grounds such as sex discrimination, etc). So, your question comes down to this: Will they recognise you and chuck you out again? How can we know? Do you look distinctive?

FWIW, you were probably lucky the police were not called. Would joint enterprise apply to a case like this, I wonder?

yes, they can ban who they like, but in effect there is little they can do if you return to shop there.
If they spot you they can request you leave, and escort you off the premises.
If your caught shoplifting whilst banned, I think technically you could be charged with burglary.

just leave it a while before returning, and wear different clothes!
