    Hi All

Not been on for a while, I need advise with a little matter regarding our veterinary surgery we took a poorly dog to.
OK! here's the full history over the past few weeks:-

First visit: 16/4/15 took our dog because he had a bad cough and bringing up green mucus, the vet asked if he'd been in a kennel recently to which we said no he's not been in kennels since 2010. We told him what was wrong and said it looks like a chest infection, the vet prescribed 14 x Ampicillin 250 caps @ £8.87, Loxicom suspension 10ml @£ 10.00 and Vet Examination @£28.50 totaling £47.37.

On the 24/4/15 we phoned the vet back to say his cough hadn't improved and they did another course of Ampicillin @ £8.87, they said that if it hadn't cleared by the end of the second course of tablets to get in touch with them to book him in for an x-ray.
    He still wasn't right.

Second Visit: 5/5/15 the vet had a look at him and said they need to take his bloods, do an x-ray of his chest and possibly an endoscopy to see why he's still coughing. We told the vet that the mucus is now clear, they booked him in for the 7th and we took him home. we asked for the bill and they said it would be included in the final bill..

Third Visit: 7/5/15 Dropped him off at 9.10am and was told to come back at 5.10pm to collect him, when we collected him the vet said they couldn't give him a general anesthetic as there was a problem with his bloods. Two markers showed up for a liver and said it was to dangerous to put him under anesthetic, the vet then told us that it looks like he's had a chest infection and that he's been wrongly prescribed for kennel cough as that is what it usually is?
They then said that the Ampicillin was the wrong antibiotic and wouldn't have done anything to help his chest infection so we where given Ronaxan to help fight the infection.
    Pre-operative bloods @£35.00, Haematology @£29.52, 8 x Ronaxan 100mg tablets @£19.70, Discharge consultation with vet @£28.08 Total £112.30.
The Total bill for all three visits £168.54

If they'd listened to us in the first place when we said it was a chest infection and that he hasn't been near a kennel since 2010 then I reckon the total bill would have been £48.20 (£19.70 for the Ronaxan and £28.50 for the Examination), the poor dog has suffered through all of this to a point that we've had to carry him up and down the stairs because he was to weak through constant coughing, he's hardly eaten and lost weight (which isn't a bad thing as one member of the family spoils him rotten), but it has caused us a lot of stress as we could see how unhappy he is.

Anyhow! do I have a right to complain and ask for some of the money back, I personally think they owe us an apology and a refund of £120.34.

    Advise please

    Re: Vets bills

    Hi,
Firstly I hope your lovely dog is totally back to normal or at the very least on the mend .

Kennel cough is only a name given to the infection and can be picked up in other ways apart from being in kennels. It is highly infectious and I suppose was given that name as it spreads more easily in confined areas and probably spreads to many dogs before it is even diagnosed.

There is lots of info on this if you Google and here is just one article http://www.pets4homes.co.uk/pet-advi...d-vaccine.html

If you have a read and then decide if you think the vet has gone the wrong way about things with the diagnosis and treatment you may wish to make a complaint.
    I hope this helps.

    Enaid x

      Re: Vets bills

We did tell the vet he hadn't been in a kennel since 2010 and he doesn't come into contact with other dogs as he is aggressive towards them (that's down to his previous owners using him to train pups to fight) he was a rescue dog where the owners had been arrested.
We told them that it was a chest infection rather than kennel cough, and the vet said they'll treat him for an upper respiratory tract infection as his lungs sounded clear.

I don't think they fully listened to us and jump to the conclusion that it must be kennel cough

You could try a complaint to the manager at the surgery?

Is it part of a group or a single practice?
