Please put into the right forum if in the wrong
Well just as the title say's ,had a new kitchen from a company and they recommended a fitter ,who i might add does not work for them ,they only pointed me in his direction .
we have had problem after problem with this guy ,from having a major gas leak and 3 water leaks ,damaged unit's ,uneven floor tiles ,plastering not up to scratch .Unlevel board's both side's of fridge ,used sticky tape around extractor pipe instead of jubilee clips ,the list goes on and on ,We paid this guy cash to get rid of him ,I know big mistake ,So ,where do we go from here ? been to CAB ,they just gave me another phone number ,who told me to contact CAB ,i kid you not ,So can i get free impartial advice from someone and send to the fitter a list of things that need rectifying ,but not by him ,and the cost involved ?your input will be much appreciated ,Mick ...

    Re: Badly fitted kitchen

    Hi and welcome
Did you have a written contract with his cowboy?

You have the right to have the kitchen fitted with reasonable skill and care, i.e. to the standard of a reasonably competent trader or professional.
You also need to give him the opportunity to make good his work, unless you have lost all faith in his abilities

Before proceeding further take photographs of the problems, include in them a measure to high light uneven surfaces etc.
Then your next step is to write (signed for) to him, listing the faults and requesting he corrects the faults within a reasonable period.
Advise him that if he fails you will appoint a proper tradesman and recover all costs from him, the cowboy.

You should also complain to the firm who recommended him, and let them know you will not be keeping mum about the quality of their recommendations.

Eventually you might have to resort to a county court claim, but if the guy has no money.......................

      Hi Des 8 ,
We have lost all faith in him to come and rectify all the faults ,also we have had a snappy afternoon photographing everything ,we have done exactly what you have described ,We downloaded a template from trading standards stating what he has to do to ,we have given him 14 day's to respond ,We have stated we do not want him to do any work ,but to compensate us , and we will appoint a competent fitter .Is that about ok ? do you think ?

        Sounds fine.
Have you costed the remedial works?
It would be a good idea to know what expenditure is likely to be before discussing compensation amounts.

I have already asked for a third of the cost ,of which we found reasonable ,which includes compensation ,If he or someone had to put right the kitchen ,everything would have to be re-installed and some units replaced ,so we have just estimated ourselves ..we will await his response if any ,he just did not want to be here when doing the job ,and he was that laid back and you could tell he wasn't interested .

'from having a major gas leak' now that is scarey. Is this guy registered to carry out gas works?

No he's not ,it was a so called mate who was a gas engineer ,He told us that he never left us with a leak ,but British gas said otherwise ,and it was a major gas leak ,emergency gas was called out , and it was a leaking Hob ..

You may want to check his mates credentials as if he isn't registered it may give you some leverage if he doesn't want to play ball as they say.

We do not know if he is qualified ,as he did not leave any certificate ,however we have a readout of the test he did when he was called back by British gas to put things right .

Check that he is Gas safe registered and follow any advice that you get regarding your actions before a legal case.

AS he was "called back by BG to put things right" I suspect he was Gas Safe registered. Surely they wouldn't refer it back to him without checking, or am I still just too naive?

The gas was cut off until i phoned the kitchen fitter /cowboy to call his gasman to come back and check the leaking hob ,and then he admitted there was a leak but he didn't do it .
