  • shop lifting at Primark and RLP on my case need some help and advise

    Hello,
I really need some help and advise on what to do...
I have read quite a few stories on this particular case.
I am 19 year old girl from the south east and I was caught doing a shameful act of theift in Primark, I know its wrong of me and Regret everything !! but whats happened has happened and i can't change it so there's no point in dwelling, all i want to do is sort this out and leave it in the past.
I was caught on CCTV taking a top that was £7.50, once I was walking out the doors a security guard came and took me to the back room where a police men came and took down all my details... I didn't lie about anything, this is my first incedent with the police and hopefully my last. They didn't give me a criminal record but they said that I am band from Primark (which is fine for me, that was my first time in the shop and the last) and that I would get a RLP letter in the post for wasting there time and so on.... I was in back room for about 15minutes and I gave the top back with no damage, I don't see why I now need to pay a £89 fine. URGH so stressful as I have no money... what should I do ? I have already received the letter.

Ignore the letter. You will get more but continue to ignore.

      Hi and welcome to LB.
You say you have read about these chancers RLP, so really you know you have to do nothing, other than sit tight and await the blizzard of scary letters written in legalese and possibly red ink.
      The shop have lost nothing.
Their security costs would have been incurred whether or not you had taken the top. The security guard was doing the job he was paid for.
Have you read the "Oxford case "details. http://www.farrarsbuilding.co.uk/cms...-v-B-K_001.pdf
The case was discussed here on LB: : RLP and the Oxford test case: The truth and the lies

As far as we are aware RLP have not ventured back into court
If you wish you could write to RLP denying you owe primark or RLP anything, and advise them you are aware of the "Oxford Case"

PS can't understand why anyone would go to Primark in the first place!

yeah the ones that I read say "don't pay the rlp anything, they cant touch you" but in my situation the police was involved and said "if you don't pay they we will take you to court"..... I am in such a state of what to do. I want to tell someone in my family but I am so ashamed I cant!! I'm split in two parts.. yeah okay ignore the letters and it MAY pass or just pay it monthly as I have no money to pay it all in one go then its all over. but I gave back the t-shirt good as new and I was only held in there for 15minutes, this was my first crime and I feel as though this is unfair. I just want a lawyer to be on my side and take primark to court.

don't be sorry. HAHA I WISH I COULD.. maybe then I don't have to pay the fine. Because I read allot saying that primark has taken people to court so then they pay the RLP, but they always failed in court so I just thought it could be possible option.

Were you charged with anything? Did Primark get the goods back undamaged?
I do agree with the advice you have been given up to now, in my opinion you are best to ignore any letters from RLP unless they send a court claim (very unlikely)

Thank you all so much for your advise and support on this matter. For further advise do you think I should go into citizens advice bureau or is that a bad idea ??

Put tis aside as a mistake in your life ignore all the threats unless they send an application for a CCJ which is the only court action they can take,if and when that happens come back on here for advice.

If this is getting to you share it with a trusted family member

Citizens Advice might be a good plan (if you want to). You can also come back to this thread for further advice and support at any time

Just got back after being out.
Already you can understand how RLP work.
They pressurize victims (yes, in spite of your pecadillo you are now a victim) and frighten them into paying these invented costs.
The comments made by the police were spoken out of ignorance and can be ignored.
You can speak to Citizens Advice, but they should only give you the same advice (depends on the quality of the adviser)
The letters from RLP seem to last between 8 and 16 months.
I read somewhere that approx 60% of victims don't pay, but the 40% who do are a nice little earner for RLP and make it all worthwhile for them.
It is your decision whether or not to pay them as you are the one to be pressurized.
                            I personally would not.
