Ryan air conditions

I have a friend who had booked tickets with Ryan air to fly from Leeds/Bradford to Ireland the .gov web site says travel on this route is allowed without the need for a passport, the airline took their money with no mention of passports then when they tried to printout their boarding cards they required the passport numbers for the passengers, they do not have passports so when they contacted Ryan air they were told no tickets and no refund!
If this is Ryan's policy then why don't they ask for the passport numbers at the time of booking?
I consider this to be sharp practise to get money out of the unwary customer, what do others think/

Did they book on line? If so it's yet another warning to those buying anything on line to read the terms and conditions.
Ryanair clearly state on their website that a valid passport is required.
This has been their policy (and nearly all airlines although I think some will accept uk issued photo licence) since 9/11.

Yes they did book on line, and they accept that they missed the bit about needing a passport, my point was that airlines that require passports for all flights; should ask for a passport number before they take your money!

I take it as granted that any cross border travel, either by air,sea or land will need a passport, that way you are never caught out. Hell, I even take mine if I am going south of the Watford Gap.

Just a note on this, Ryan Air are sticklers for rules and slip ups believe me I have been there and paid the price, so have friends.
You should never go on any budget airline or indeed take any budget deals without reading the T&Cs first. The fact you need a passport to travel with them to any destination is very clear on the facts page.
