  • Tesco petrol pumps?

A rant against Tesco petrol station.
I've filled up many times at my local Tesco's. I like the pumps as you can enter the amount of fuel you want to buy and the pump will automatically cut-off when its reached that amount. Never had a problem before until today. I entered £20, as I have done on many other occasions, and started to fill up. The pump cut-off at £20.12 (12p over).

Went into kiosk and was asked to pay £20.12 so explained to the cashier what had happened. She said it must be my fault for not entering the amount correctly and got right arsey with me. I used the pump correctly and entered the correct amount so wasn't best pleased to be made to break into another £20 note. I said I couldn't have entered an incorrect amount as you can only enter whole pounds and not pence and as the pump cut-off at £20.12 must be a glitch within that pump.

Well she reluctantly accepted the £20 but her attitude and manner towards me was hostile and was clear she didn't believe me and thought I was trying in on to gain an extra 12 pence. Don't know whether to make a complaint about this.

They could always ask for it back. On the other hand, as the error is theirs, you would be quite entitled to expect to be paid for the inconvenience that taking it out again would entail.

    About 12p ...

We noticed that the ones at ours nearly always click over another 1p when you hav finished filling up.

Well, yes, you really must, as that cashier will continue to be rude to customers for as long as she goes unpunished.

Indeed, you should write to Tesco's head office and tell them that you will withdraw the custom of your entire fleet of motor cars until and unless that cashier submits to a good, old-fashioned, hand spanking on her bare buttocks and over your knee, in front of her colleagues.

I'm sure that Tesco will be eager to oblige.

Perhaps (?) more seriously. this should be reported to Trading Standards as the metering on that pump may be faulty.

Trawling through tesco site, they sure don't make it easy to find an address dedicated for complaints! Google through up customer.service@tesco.co.uk so I wrote to that and have received a reply. They're sorry and have passed details of the complaint to the store manager and as soon as he gets back will relay the information to me.

When using other garages I pay the extra if I go over and keep the odd penny in the car for when the pump jumps from .99 to .01 (no matter how lightly you feather the trigger). With the tesco auto cut-off pumps I was just peeved by her attitude making out that I was trying to gain 12p extra fuel! It must have been a fault, on every other occasion the pump slows down as you get close to the amount pre-programmed, on this occasion I didn't notice the pump slow down until it abruptly cut-off and showing £20.12.

I would be inclined to bring this to the attention of your local Trading Standards Department. Fuel pumps must be accurate within certain tolerances and it sounds like the ones at the Tesco store you mention need testing for accuracy. Tesco will probably throw a hissy fit if TSOs turn up to check their petrol and diesel pumps, but they know they are subject to checks without prior notice.

I presume that the OP got the extra 12 pence worth of petrol in the car?
Customs and excise check the amount of fuel delivered and what can TS do a complaint to Tescos OK but what does the OP want?

                          Re: Tesco petrol pumps?

I regularly piss off my local petrol station on the odd occasions I find myself having to buy fuel. The amount of times the damned pump has clicked over 1p extra, even though i've already hung up the nozzle.

I don't get into a debate with them and they don't argue anymore, but put simply i'd goto the counter, they'd ask for £20.01, i'd inform them that it was £20.00 when I hung up the nozzle and walked to the counter, put the £20 on the counter and then walk away.

Hanging up the nozzle should cut off the power to the pump, and thus the digital counter, if it doesn't then theres something wrong. I don't discuss it with them, I tell them.

Must give credit where credit is due ...our local Morrisons often click over the extra 1 pence but the staff at the kiosk always say just £5.... £10..... £20 or what ever......it appears that Morrisons are well aware that the pumps can do this.....Can't knock Morrisons on this point at least.

Think the woman at ours went to the same charm school as yours, when I questioned the 1p she said well go somewhere else then.
Yes we would if we could but you have the monopoly the local garage cannot compete so charges the same. And the next nearest is guess what a Tesco.(although it is cheaper somehow surely price should be the same no matter what branch you go to?)
