This a very handy site to know about, i actually found it by accident, Bluebottle might know of it, its a free police check site for checking if a vehicle is recorded as stolen,
My grandson called to see me today with his new [secondhand ] car i thought it looked in far too good a condition to be costing him only £600 ,and it was only a 2004 reg, peugot 206
I looked on the DVLA site first which led to the checkitfree one,and lo and behold the car is recorded as stolen. now the person he was buying it from has said he could pay him monthly and also said he has insured it for him, but my grandson wasnt given the log book or any other documents, supposed to be getting them today
Obviously now he is returning the car, and luckily hasnt paid anything yet, but to make things worse it is a relative on his fathers partners side, who my grandson was warned would sell his own mother

Although it is recorded on that site as a stolen vehicle,my grandson has been told it is a stolen and recovered car,but surely it would say
Dont know if he is still having the car, but will have to see what documents are with it

In that case, your grandson needs to check with his insurers about the status of the car. If it is listed as "Stolen and Recovered", he needs to establish if it was stolen and recovered without a payment being made to the RO/RK, or whether it was stolen and then recovered after a payment had been made to the RO/RK. This should, hopefully, avoid problems later.
