  • Pet Insurance, confused!

Anyone have any ideas about a good dog insurance policy?

Am looking for a lifetime cover policy for a small pug, aged almost 3 years.

    I have looked at petplan classic/ultimate and;
    John Lewis.

Although, John Lewis state that they cannot call their plan: lifetime cover?

It would seem that most pet insurance starts out reasonably inexpensive. But, increases alarmingly as the pet ages!

It strikes me that it is better to pay a higher rate at the outset and keep that rate, as near as damn it, for the entire life of the pet (one of course has to allow for inflation)

So, any suggestions will be welcome, as I am totally confused due to the recent Halifax/Lloyds debacle...

We have our pets insured via petplan and they have been pretty cool, as long as the vaccinations are up to date they are decent enough.
We have mix breeds, but have to pay slightly more for Luna cos she has ridgeback in her and they are borderline dangerous dogs and all that.. shes that dangerous you fall over her!!

We had petplan reccomended to us, but TBH we only have insurance because she has ridgeback in her, and they give you legal cover too.

It's a mine field tbh as there are so many clauses etc and many wont treat conditions on the insurance more than once so you have to look very carefully at the T&Cs.
This from MSE may help http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/ins...nsurance-costs

I have my horses insured with pet plan and my cat with Sainsbury's (long story but she's good at getting locked in other people's houses and causing damage so I have it to cover that lol) I have the horses with petplan as a friend of mine had their horse with them and he had to have some pretty extensive and expensive treatment after an injury (on Boxing Day!!!) and they paid out without an issue as soon as vets paperwork was in order. I have also heard other stories that as long as your claim is valid and you have vet evidence to back it up then their pay out time is good. The only thing as Enaid said is some clauses that can be added with accidents/incidents. For example if my horse injures say his right leg, a tendon and needs treatment, once that treatment is completed that leg will not be covered AT ALL for injury afterwards. Even if it has nothing to do with the original injury. I have also had another insurance company wriggle out on a technicality when my tack was stolen from the yard. Pet plan seem to be quite good and I have an area on my policy that states any exceptions to the cover and why - luckily (touch wood!) I have none to date.

I haven't ever had to claim from Pet plan or Sainsbury's but I would say Sainsbury's is probably a bit more expensive than other companies but the cover is good.

I'm with Petplan. My dog has had a skin / ear condition all his life. They have not once quibbled about paying out, and it must have cost them thousands.

Anyone else with Petplan whose premiums are increasing, balme me! lol

Okay, have signed up with Petplan Covered4Life Classic policy.
Not the cheapest of course, but IMO appear to probably the best in the long run.

Others are cheaper but when asked how much will the premiums increase each year?
Gave unsatisfactory responses e.g. risk based excuses etc.
Also, when asked they appeared reluctant to confirm that their policies are indeed covered for life.

Our little dog is very young and has has not been unwell but one never knows what may happen 5/8 years down the line?
