  • Hotel Dispute

I need a guide as to who is at fault in a hotel dispute matter.
I visited a hotel booking website, made a reservation for a one night stay, and filled in my debit card details, (these I understood were only to be used if I proved to be a no-show.)
Subsequent to this I received an email, presumably from the website, confirming my reservation, with a booking reference number.
I arrived at the hotel on the designated date, only to be told that a wedding party was going on, and that all rooms had been booked for them some six months prior to the date for which I had the confirmation email.
On telephoning the website's contact number I received an apology and the casual mention that "by the way, your card has been debited for the price of the night's accomodation."
Since then, amid a flurry of emails and telephone calls, the hotel management has assured me that my money will be re-credited to my card, and that they will email me an offer of a free night's stay.
One week later neither of these things have come to pass.
If, as seems likely, I have to resort to threats of legal action to recover the money, who is the guilty party for me to aim at, the website, or the individual hotel?

who has actually debited your card? Is it the website or the hotel?
