  • Bathroom Disaster

I employed a builder (Steve) registered with Check a Trade to completely refit my bathroom..He agreed but then took on a big job whilst we were waiting for the materials to arrive from a bathroom supplier. We advised him that the goods had arrived only to be informed that the job he had undertaken was proving bigger than he'd thought so wouldn't be able to start for a few weeks but had a colleague (Chris) who was able to do the plumbing, tiling etc..He (Chris) has fitted the bath, toilet, sink & tiled the floor & walls but the standard of work with the wall tiling is very poor..Quite a few of the tiles are not flush & jut out & we have explained we are not happy with the quality of his work.We have also explained this to the builder (Steve) who has agreed that the work is far from satisfactory...He (Chris) has agreed to correct this & has said that it would take a day to put right...Family & friends have agreed with us that really the whole wall tiling job would need doing again needing new tiles to be purchased..This would take quite a few days to complete, not one.We don't really want this guy (Chris) back as we aren't confident that he would do a better job next time round..We would rather get a specialist tiler in to do the job..We were quoted just over £3,000 for the whole job & have only given him(Chris) £500 so far to purchase some materials & for some of the work he has undertaken. We aren't going to give him (Chris) another penny until we are happy with his work. How do we stand legally if we were to ask a tiler of our choice to complete the work?..We don't want to pay another tiler to do the work only to find that the guy who started the work is entitled to more money..We can't even flush the toilet as that is blocked & won't flush away..This guy (Chris) is a plumber (supposedly) & this is due to something he has/hasn't done.I managed to unblock it once but haven't been able to unblock it the second time round.Thankfully we have a downstairs toilet...

    Greetings Pompey,

Great Team !!!! now my first thoughts are have you phoned trading standards I would do that first to see where you stand legally.

Check a Trade IMHO is not a good source to find a reputable trader as there vetting standards are not upto scratch however to late for that now.

Is £500 all you have paid thus far? if so do not hand over anymore funds until you have spoken to trading standards and got there take on the matter.

This is the office details you want:

    http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/s...ode-search.cfm

Also have a look here for info:

    Good Luck

    Regards
If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.

Tell BBC Watchdog about Chris's antics.

Tiling isn't difficult, though. Why not do it yourself?

I don't have the time to do it myself due to working lots of hours..I've done tiling before though & did a good job.
