hi im just wondering if u can advise me on the best action to take,i put a deposit of 100 pound down on a car,the finance deal fell thru at the last hurdle and was told by the car firm they would refund me the money,i also asked them if i would get refunded before i gave it to them if there were any problems and the manager/owner said yes,now since the finance has fell thru,the company havent refunded and im ringin nearly every day.the person i need to speak to is never there convienently!and ive also sent emails to them as i was told to.ive had no response from them and im bein given the run around,again i rang today and the bloke i spoke to said he,d ring me back in 5 min,im now sat 45 min later still waitin for that call back!!! any advice wot i can do to get my money back.thank you.x

how long has it been since they notified you they would be unable to provide finance? How did you pay the £100 deposit (cash, cheque, debit card, credit card)? If you paid via credit card you can call the credit card company and issue a charge back.

Do you have a copy of any documentation from the application? The key to check is if the deposit is refundable or not on the documentation. Its been known for places to charge a non refundable fee to apply, even though they may tell you something different when speaking to you.

If the deposit is specified as refundable in the documentation and you paid by cash or cheque then keep trying to contact the company. Put a letter in, recorded delivery, where you state you give them 14 days to refund your money. If they continue to ignore you after that, then Id try moneyclaim

hi i paid the deposit to the people who have the car,its a car sales place.i paid it with visa electron.the finance company were separate to them,the sales man said to pay the deposit to secure the car i wanted,he told me over the phone it was refundable.the only thing i have documentation wise is the finance agreement.which they didnt deduct the deposit so they also told the sales man to refund it to me as i was payin full price for the car and not the amount with the deposit takin off.i had signed all the finance docs pendin a job check which my payroll company gave the wrong information,so it was withdrawn.!so now im left havin to keep ringin and emailin the carsales company!

Contact your bank who the card is attached to and ask them to issue a chargeback. Explain the situation and tell them you have tried to resolve the matter with the merchant directly but are unable to get the money back. They may not give you it back immediately but this way the weight of Visa comes down on the garage that took your payment and they have to prove they had a legal right to.
