Does anyone out there know if a mechanic / auto repair man needs a license to run a garage & conduct the business of car repair & maintenance???

Quite simply, no they do not need a license to service and repair vehicles.

As a company, they need to comply with other conditions as do any other business, e.g HMRC, Companies House etc.

If they offer credit then they need to hold a consumer credit license.

If they carry out M.O.T testing they need to be authorised by the Department of Transport (DTp) and monitored by the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

If they are a waste producer (e.g waste oil etc), they need to be registered with the Environment Agency.

There are other requirements, but as for the general maintainence and repair of vehicles there is no specific license needed.
