I was in a supermarket earlier today, where I was tailed by a security guard as soon as I entered. I paid for my shopping at the till and threw the receipt in the bin on my way out. The security guard observed me the entire time.
Upon leaving, he chased me out of the shop and asked me to show him my receipt. I explained to him that he had seen me throw this in the bin. He told me to go back and get it. I refused and told him that, if he wanted to see it, he could fish it out of the bin himself.
He did not like this response and shoved me in the chest. I called 999 while stood in front of him, providing a physical description and his SIA ID number to the operator. As I was doing this, the security guard called for backup. Backup arrived in the form of the deputy manager, who grabbed my wrist, twisting it. I pushed him off me and they then both physically restrained me.
The security guard admitted that he hadn't seen me steal anything and had paid for my shopping, but I didn't have a receipt. The security guard wanted to search my bag, but I said that I would wait for the police I had called to arrive.
They both attempted to take my wallet out of my pocket, but I prevented them from getting it. A bystander then intervened and all three of them tried to push me back inside the supermarket. I was still on the call to the 999 operator, who could hear everything that was going on and had instructed me to try to get away. I explained that it was difficult with three people assaulting me.
Eventually, the security guard pushed me to the floor and ripped my bag open, damaging it beyond repair, while also breaking several items I had purchased.
The security guard and the passer-by had me pinned to the floor while the manager went through my shopping item by item. The security guard confirmed that I hadn't stolen anything and had paid for it all. They let go of me and all of them kicked me a few times as I was getting to my feet.
I ran away, with only the passer-by giving pursuit, before eventually stopping chase and letting me go upon instruction from the manager.
Police arrived at the scene and interviewed my assailants before calling me. They told me that they had closed the case as all three of them had given a th same account of events and they were convinced there was no crime. I was told that I could not provide a statement and they would not be requesting the CCTV or body cam footage. I was also told that it was acceptable for the staff to have attacked me as it was in order to prevent potential loss.
I called 101 and raised a complaint against the police officers. I have been told that I still cannot provide a statement surrounding the assault as the case is closed and it will be up a sergeant handling the complaint against the police officers as to whether the assault will be looked into or not.
I had posted on another forum, but was told that everything else detailed here was perfectly legal and that not having a receipt is sufficient grounds to assume theft (regardless of the fact that my every move was observed and the security guard confirmed that I hadn't stolen anything). I have also been told that it was fine for them to continue assaulting me after they searched my bag without my consent and agreed that I hadn't stolen anything.
Surely, surely this is not right?
