  • Unfinished job

    Hi all
In March we employed a company to lay underfloor heating and marble tiles.
When the tiles were laid the tiler explained that there were some scratches to the tiles which when the grout etc had dried out he would come and buff them out.
He also said he would fit the door threshold at the same time as buffing out the scratches.

The underfloor heating system came with a lifetime guarantee, but unfortunately the paperwork was in a place we could not get to until all the grout work had dried out.
He said he would also complete this when he comes back to do the other jobs.

So eventually he messaged us to say he had got the door threshold and gave a date to come and finish the job off.

He then sent another message cancelling that date and gave another which came and went without him showing up.

I have tried to contact him several times via email and messages but have had no response.
I have also tried ringing him again without any response.

Is there any other action I can take to get the job completed.
But my main concern is the guarantee for the underfloor heating system will be non existent if I cannot get him to fill in the paperwork.

I do have the paperwork that the electrician gave us when he commissioned the underfloor heating system if that is of any help in this situation.

    i appreciate any help given

    Hi
How much was the job in total and how much money did you hold back until he completed the work 100%?

Because the tiler is ignoring my request to complete the paperwork for the underfloor heating system would the courts look at my case sympathetically.
I am looking to take the company to the small claims court to have the monies I have paid to have the underfloor heating and tiles laid reimbursed back to me. I would also look for reimbursement of the cost of the tiles and the cost of having the tiles and underfloor heating to be taken up.

i know it looks like a lot of trouble to have the flooring and the underfloor heating replaced but it looks like the only way I am going to get a heating system under a warranty which is essential to me.

You should make enquiries with an insurance broker about obtaining insurance/warranty for latent defects appearing in the next 10 years.
Add the cost of this insurance to the cost of another tradesman completing the unfinished work and then consider making a court claim to recover your total costs

            Hi PEZZA54
That is a reasonable thought, but the warranty that comes with the underfloor heating is a lifetime guarantee provided it is completed and installed to their specifications at the time of installation.

I will look on line for a similar warranty but I very much doubt I will find one.

              Hi all
I’ve tried to contact companies to cover the underfloor heating system.
Most companies will not cover this and the ones that would ask for silly money.

I have tried twice to contact the company that installed the underfloor heating since my last post but have had no response from them.

So it seems my next move is to send them a Letter of Action.

As the company have not completed the job ie,
not fitted a door threshold bar, not completed the warranty paperwork, and not attempted to remove the scratches to the tiles they caused, would I be entitled to a full refund of the contract £2000.

So for me to get a underfloor heating system with a warranty all the existing tiles and underfloor heating would have to be lifted up, which in turn would cause damage to the tiles.

Would I be able to ask for the cost of this work and the cost to replace the tiles on top of the original contract price.

              costs = £2000 original contract

£1200 to replace tiles (supplied by myself)

£600 estimate. To lift up the tiles and underfloor heating and disposal.

Thank you for your help so far.

Sorry IMO your chance of a successful court claim would be greater if based on post 5
50 year (lifetime) warranties come with onerous terms and conditions and are usually not transferable

If in 30 years time you are still living at the property and the underfloor heating stops working, do you really think the company (if it still exists) is going to return to take up the tile floor etc to replace the heating installation?

                  Hi PEZZA54

                  Thanks again for your response.

The warranty would be with the manufacturer of the underfloor heating, but needed to be signed off by the installer.

I would try speaking to an insurance broker for a comparable warranty
They will contact several companies for a competitive quote.
Have you checked the warranty you should have had? Probably only the first 10 years are covered for labour and materials
