In brief, inflated quote, didn't complete anything like what was in quote, 'found' extra work last minute he could only do that day etc.

Stood over me demanding I pay by bank transfer before he sent me proof etc. Never provided promised receipt etc.

Google guaranteed, glowing reviews, on companies house though company formed in 2023, no accounts. Looked legit.

In short: found out later hes been inside 3 times for defrauding others in exactly same way.

Raised a crm claim through bank. Declined

    Trading Standards report: obviously

Police: wouldn't even take a report.

My question is: do I have a case for a refund from the bank under CRM Code? Ive taken it to the FO, and i think the evidence is compelling but my bank think otherwise.

    Thanks

No not a claim under the CRM Code

You didn't mention his finished standard of work, just his abrasive attitude at the end of the job.

You may have a claim against the building company under CRA if the work was not finished to a reasonable standard. You have his company name, address and a quotation.

Thanks but I did cite a history of similar frauds and convictions for this person. That's the only reason I'm going CRM route.

You need to push Trading Standards, the 'last' thing they want on their patch is a 'Rogue's Trader'. It ups the workload for them, when they can be dealing with other matters. Give them the 'history of similar frauds and convictions'.

Thanks for your replies. To clarify, the work undertaken was shoddy eg the main issue was replacing the lead flashing on the chimney. They put cement over it (which isnt recommended as it cracks relatively quickly). They also repaired a guttering than dripped that now releases a tsunami.

Trading Standards have a huge file on this trader and have asked me to provide a witness statement as they are seeking a criminal prosecution.

I informed my bank but its still apparently ' a civil matter.'

I have complained to the Financial Ombudsman but its a ling process. If anyone has been in a similar situation, please let me know your outcome.

We have been significantly financially impacted by this.
