  • Car garage performed a unacceptable job

Hi all, I have a Land Rover Discovery 3 which I took to a garage for major work. This was a Body off job, to remove the body welding was 1st required which I was well aware of. The garage was instructed to carry out the following works listed below: (this is the actual list given to garage, with my issues in italic bold lettering)

    Discovery 3 Overland prep.

⦁ Body off, derust and treat chassis to rust protection and fit body lift (no bolts supplied with the kit) I've checked, and they are M13 standard, the supplier is claiming M12 for bodylift?. (Upon inspection the chassis was not derusted, was not fully covered/coated and the garage did not even remove the rear wheel and treat the area it sits) As for the body lift it never got fitted, all he needs to do was get longer bolts made up which I would have paid for. A fuel line was left loose and painted over, after lifting up the fuel line I discover rusty chassis!!
⦁ Change engine, gearbox and diff oils and filters. (I haven't checked yet, but I do think it got done)
⦁ Weld sills near and offsides at the rear. (He tried to charge me £800 until I advised him, I was once a welder)
⦁ Check and clean/service brake callipers. (Think he did this)
⦁ Front O/S CV boot. (Can you supply please). (Yes, he did this)
⦁ Fuel filters inc one in tank. (Yes, he did this)
    ⦁ Cambelt. (Yes)
⦁ Fix tail gate. (Not fixed, it only needed a new boot switch)
⦁ Replace injector as per diagnostic cyl 3 fuel trim minimum?(I say this because I've googled it and on a LR forum this issue was solved by replacing the FI) and address the other fault codes. (Garage is telling me OBD port was not working and to question the man who remapped it and the fault codes he quoted)
⦁ Fit polybush set (supplied). (yes)
⦁ Fit and wire in dash switch bank (supplied). (He wired them into a permanent live, therefore creating a drain on the battery, I have had to disconnect them)
⦁ Fit bumper and winch and wire in the winch and fog lights to dash switch bank. (Yes, but sloppy job, didn't even fit a kill switch to the winch, this could be dangerous)
⦁ Wire roof rack lights to dash switch bank. (Wired them into a permanent live, therefore creating a drain on the battery)
⦁ 4-wheel alignment. (claimed it was something he couldn't do, so when I took to another garage to do this job is when I see all the shit workmanship after it got put on a ramp)
⦁ Handbrake cables replacing, and module rewound. (If you can't do, I'll get done elsewhere). (I sent him a vid on how to do the job as it's easy with the body off, he never even bothered to try and fix it, all it needed was rewinding and new cables)
    ⦁ Oil leak. (Still leaking)

Then anything you find just ring me 1st please. Also, could I have a price to raptor paint it. Thx Edgar.

I was originally quoted £1500 and a week to do the work, after 6 weeks I was contacted and told it was now £4100, at no point did he try to contact me to tell me the massive price hike. I asked the garage for an itemised bill (still waiting) and pics sent but not acceptable. On questioning the state of the welding, he scrapped the cost of the welding £800 and took the hit for a MAF sensor to cure a flat spot £100. This did not fix the flat spot and after a 5min search I found the cause of the flat spot told the garage and he made a temporary repair instead of ordering the actual part (rubber seal) I now need to take pics of all the areas he missed on the chassis and ask once again for him to sort out the issues I raised. I don't really want to speak to the guy anymore TBH.

How long do I give this guy to sort out the problems out or do I take the car to an independent specialist for a 2nd opinion, before going through the courts?

    TIA Scott

I'd just like to add that I have not seen any of the parts he claims to have replaced, nor have I had an itemised bill despite numerous requests. He has now stated he does not want to deal with me or the car. I'm taking the car to a garage to use a ramp and take photo's of the poor work and lack of work. I'm considering getting an independent report done for court, is that a good idea?

I think if this was me you really need to arrange for somebody such as the AA to carry out a full inspection, reason if this comes down to a Court case, that will be difficult for the so-called garage to dispute shoddy repairs.
