  • Rights under Warranty

I have a printer that has developed a fault and I need to get it looked at. The invoice from the supplier clearly shows that it has a 4 year warranty but the manufacturer which is American with first line support conducted by phone from the USA is claiming that as the manufacturers garuntee form was not filled in within 6 months of purchase the garuntee is not valid. I have nothing in the invoice or literature that was supplied to me to tell me any of this. Can I claim against the supplier.

If you are in the UK then yes you can claim against the supplier. Any guarantee is in addition to your normal rights.

Can the UK supplier be made to honour the US manufacturer's guarantee/warranty? On what grounds?

(I'm not asking an awkward question - I'd genuinely like to know how this would be enforced beyond UK statutory rights).

No, the guarantee is a contract with the manufacturer, you have a contract with the UK supplier

But the OP is asking if they can claim on the manufacturer's guarantee against the supplier, not about their consumer rights under UK law. That's why the post is headed "Rights under Warranty" and only talks about "guarantees" and not any statutory protection. That's the only way the post makes sense.

Just to clarify what I mean, the response to the OP's question that "If you are in the UK then yes you can claim against the supplier. Any guarantee is in addition to your normal rights" sounds as if the OP can claim against the supplier under the US manufacturer's guarantee in addition to their stautory rights, not that they only have their statutory rights against the supplier.

PS - I'm not the OP

Your claim against the supplier will be on the basis of a breach of contract as per Consumer Rights Act 2015.
How long have you had the printer?
            How much did it cost?
Any idea how much it will cost to have it repaired?
