  • Council Tax + Data Protection

    Hi

A bit of background: Earlier this week, I telephone our Council Tax Office to pay this month's over the phone and to set up a direct debit. I already have access online to view the bill but there is no access to pay online.

Yesterday, I received an email from someone at the council tax office asking for clarification that the information I had given them was correct (and it contained the direct debit guarantee notice) The email also contained our bank name, the names on our bank account, sort code, account number, council tax ref number - you name it, it was there!

Anyone any ideas on what laws I can quote when I call them today (apart from data protection).

    Many thanks

Every time you write a cheque and give it to someone, you also provide your bank name, the names on your account, the sort code and the account number so whilst this will constitute personal data, it is hardly top secret.

What is it you want to achieve by calling them again today?

Clarification as to why they sent personal data by e-mail (which is not secure) and to request that this does not happen again.
