As the deadline approaches for PPI I decided to do some checks. To my surprise I found I had had PPI on an overdraft going back many years.
The account had been opened in my name but later became a joint account then in 2006 I separated and took my name off the account.
The bank have written to me and told me the PPI has already been dealt with in August 2018.
I can only presume my ex wife made a claim so I phoned the bank. I was told they couldn't tell me the result of the claim because it wasn't made by me.
I remonstrated that I was entitled to half of any compensation during the time it was a joint account which I know will have been considerable. The bank told me that because it was on an overdraft they only had to pay out to the first person who claimed
Just to add that the whole time we had the account together mine was the main salary by far that got paid in.
To add to the confusion I phoned the ombudsman for advice and they told me the bank would only have paid out on her half and not mine but that I couldn't complain about this because it was more than six months since it was settled and the time limit has gone.
It doesn't make sense to me. The bank won't tell me the outcome because I never made the claim yet I can't do anything about it because more than six months has passed.
The way I see it, the bank has either given my ex my half of the money which it shouldn't have or it kept mine and has a loop hole to stop me claiming it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
