Getting rid of statute barred car??

I got a car on finance in 2006. Stopped making payments around 2009, think there was about 10 mths payments left at the time. So if its not already it wont be far off statute barred. I do still get letters from them now and again but i just ignore them. The car has seen better days and i really need a new one. Trouble is i dont know how to get rid of the one i have got?? Not sure if i can sell it without it coming back on me or scrap it?? I dont want to contact the finance company british credit trust as this would acknowledge the debt. Help? Thanks
