Ruby vs Sheriff Officers

Can anyone please give me some advice. I live in Scotland and I have just been handed by two sherrif officers at my home address a 'charge for payment of money'. If I do not come up with £1000 by the end of next week they will arrest my husband's salary. If I had anyway of paying this money I would. It has only come to light that we are probably due council tax benefit and when I called both the council and the sherrif officers and asked them to hold off their action until the situation was resolved they refused. Can any one help? the sherrif officers are Walker Love. This is partly my fault that I have let this escalate to this level because My mum died a year ago after a long battle with cancer, then a few months later my mother-in-law developed breast cancer and then to top it all I was involved in a serious road accident ... as you can imagine things like dealing with finances had to take a step back.
