A friend, a Czech male aged 57, having worked in UK for 17 years, decided to transfer his Sanlam occupational pension of 11 years in South Africa to UK as he has permanent leave to remain.. It was transferred in June 2019 into his bank account but in November before he could move it into a pension fund, his mental health broke down and he tried to sign on for Universal Credit. He has a written proof from Sanlam that a lump sum payment into his bank account in Jun 2019 was his occupational pension lump sum. DWP refused him Universal Credit as he has "too much savings.."
We took the problem to his MP. The answer was the same. No go.
Wrote to Therese Coffey Minister DWP. Query disappeared into the ether.
I took it up with my MP who as taken it to the International Queries part of the DWP. Six weeks - no response..
Question
Can the DWP deem all monies in a bank account as savings, despite irrefutable proof from the pension provider that a large portion of the money in his account is actually his his occupational pension?
Isn't this against his human rights when he has proof of this payment?
PS As he has only worked for 17 years in UK and never drawn benefit he will, on reaching retirement age, have a very low pension.
Babs.
