I nipped into the bank to deposit some money today and the door was open but no one on the floor. I’d assumed they’d gone to file something as there was a door open to another room so I went to a machine to deposit £130. The machine then ate £60 so I was pretty annoyed, then when I looked for someone there was still nobody there. Then the alarm started going off.
I called NatWest (took three attempts and half an hour as the call dropped twice... very annoying) and an advisor told me the branch wasn’t supposed to be open today but they’d call back about the £60. While I was on the phone the police came to ask questions so I was kindly advised I’d get a call back at a better time after they’d looked into the lost money.
Then the police arrested me, handcuffed me and put me in the back of the van on suspicion of bank robbery! It absolutely knocked me for six! I have anxiety too so I was really just trying to focus on remaining conscious. All sorts of outlandish scenarios were going through my head and it doesn’t help that I’ve watched a lot of programmes about people being wrongly sentenced.
At the station I spent nearly an hour handcuffed waiting in a cold room to be questioned, then before it got to that point they’d managed to contact the bank manager and go through the cctv to prove my innocence. It turns out whichever employee left last yesterday (I’m assuming the manager) had left the door open and also left the room where the safe is kept in such a state the police suspected robbery.
I’m still trying to process what’s just happened so I don’t know what to do. I’ve already called NatWest to log a complaint after speaking to a friend who suggested to so it’s being escalated and the complaints manager will call me back in the next 4 working days. Will Natwest offer money to me or should I push for compensation or is it not really a big deal? I’m struggling to gauge the severity of it. I’ve explained my anxiety and will be asking for the time spent on the phone to sort it out when they call back. What would a fair amount be roughly?
