Lowell v CCJ

So I’ve gone through the process and had a letter back from Northampton CC stating my case is Defended.. but saying it could be suitable for small claims. If it’s defended and Lowell still have given me any proof of the debt (which is c9 years old so should be stayed) why do I need to do this?
