  • Son v’s landlord

Hi, I’m looking for some advise.

my son is a tenant in a 2nd floor flat. They have broken the washing machine by over filling it with clothes. So it’s stopped working. It’s an integrated washing machine and my son have tried to pull it out and the water has flooded everywhere. It has completely destroyed downstairs flat. The landlords insurance has covered the building damage but they had made my son and his other flats mates sign an agreement to pay the lady downstairs £2000 so she doesn’t have to go through her contents ins. Is this legal and is my son and the other tenants liable?
