  • House Lockout.

    Hi everyone.
I would be extremely grateful if I could receive some information and advice on the following.
I have a family member who own his own home. He lives alone and pays his mortgage regularly. However, he has been extremely foolish regarding Council Tax and has not paid it for over 6 years. He ignores all letters that come to his home. He does have mental health issues and he believes there is a conspiracy of kinds against him, and he can become quite ill. He has managed to keep working albeit sometimes only 2-3 days a week, but just enough to keep the mortgage payments intact. He came home 2 days ago, and the locks on his home have been changed. I presume this is the Council and in connection with his non-payment of Council Tax. I fear they may have made him Bankrupt and are taking possession of the house to pay the money owing. At this very late stage of the game, is there anything at all he can do? Can he legally change the locks back himself? This is a nightmare, and he knows the full gravity of it now. He is staying with us at the moment, but it is not ideal. for him, as we have Grandchildren in/out regularly. I imagine if a Bankruptcy hearing has gone ahead, it is too late to do anything, b ut I am just perhaps clutching at straws and hoping that perhaps his mental health concerns may give way to some kind of reproach or similar. This is a really urgent situation, and any help will be greatly appreciated.
