Having heard just now on the wireless that it is 50 years since Dr Beeching made the decision to prune our railways – here is a bit of nostalgia for those who had the privilege of being alive in times when branch lines existed. Times when televisions and cars were unimaginable luxuries for most households and where you walked or cycled a few miles to catch a train and happily gave up your seat to an adult traveller - when a farthing existed and you could buy something with it (a packet of sweet cigarettes, for example….)
