OK so the other day my car broke down on the road.
I mean the wheel bearing collapsed and I could not drive it any more so as I have RAC brake down cover (get you home service) I called them out.
Some one from the RAC arrived (RAC van not a sub contractor) saw the wheel was off saw half the outer bearing in pieces on the road and jacked my car up and put them back together and told me we should drive off to a local garage about 3 miles away where they will have a proper look at it for you and tell you what needs doing.
As it was obvious I needed a new bearing kit.
I folowed him in my car to the garage and the garage inspected it and said the inner bearing need replacing and also you have a brake cylinder that needs replacing as well.
Then I got a call from the RAC stating that it would cost £250 pounds to repair the car at this garage.
I said no way as I can source the parts for £20 and do them at home. The RAC agreed to this and said a brake down recovery truck is on its way to you within 90 mins.
In the mean time the RAC man had gone and the owner of the garage had got wind of this that I did not require his services. He said your car is in bits and I'm going to have to put it back together to let you go and I can't let you go with out you paying me for my time of 1 hours inspection to have a look at it
I refused and said I need to call the RAC.
I called the RAC and explained the situation, they tried to make out like I had asked the RAC man to take me to this garage. I said this is not the case as I have never used them before or never heard of them and have no local knowledge of this area .
They said I would have to pay for this and I should contact them later to try and get it reimburse.
The recovery truck arrived and the owner of the garage said he was not going to let my car go unless I paid him
I paid him £40 by visa debit off my Lloyd TSB card and his fiter put the car back together and let me take it away
Now my question is who should of paid for this; should it be the RAC or at the garages own expense or myself.
Should I ask the RAC to pay it as they asked for the work to be carried out. Should I raise an indemnity with my card issuer stating I should not have to have paid this.
Is this classed as unlawful?
Thanks
