  • Determining if a parent still has legal custody of their child

Recently my nephew was put into a young boys home. His mother, my sister, passed away a few years ago and I suspect his father has given up custody, although I have been informed that he claims to have not given up custody. I was curious if there's some way I can determine if this is true?

Currently my brother-in-law is unwilling to provide a caseworker ID for my nephew and he doesn't really seem to know anything about my nephew's current placement which is why I suspect he's lying.

If I'm able to determine whether or not he does have custody and assuming he doesn't how would I approach finding him and from there potentially provide kinship for him?
