Mediation and legal aid

I’ve been contacted by a solicitors firm via my ex regarding overnight visitation of our children. They have asked me to bring along proof of income in the form of one months bank statement. the lady I spoke to said that my entitlement to legal aid will pay for the mediation. I'm confused as to why I have to apply for the legal aid since he is the one requesting it? And why does my entitlement pay for his too?Â*
I can’t find anything on google at all that says this.Â*
