The tax office has a non premium rate number that they seem very reluctant to publicise.
0300 200 3300.
This number is charged at your normal rate, supposedly even from mobiles.
Unfortunately I had to sit listening to music for nearly half an hour, on the premium rate number, before speaking to a real live person and getting the problem sorted along with the this new number.
Apparently the tax office has put this new number in place, they just haven't told the general population. Now I wonder if this has something to do with it being tax returns season and making as much money as possible before they advertise the new number.
Anyway hope this helps someone save a few pennies. I've posted it as many places as I can.
