  • Employees rights in the security industry

I work as a doorman and a security guard. I work for one of the biggest security companies in the uk although most companies treat employees the same way.

so I’m employed full time, I work more than 50 hours per week and do not have another job. however my employers refer to me as a sole trader. What this means is that they don’t pay holiday pay or sick pay.

we are paid via a paye system but our employers also deduct some fees (accounting fee, admin fee and insurance costs)

Working hours can can be a bit rough, at my current venue I work 15 hour shifts (17:00-08:00) I am not permitted to take a break during this shift. What our contract states about breaks is that we are only allowed to take breaks if it is permitted by the venue manager.

im fairly certain that these practices are illegal but what I’m wondering is what can an employee do about it? Other than simply leaving the industry.
