Research by the Money Advice Trust, the charity that runs National Debtline and Business Debtline, shows that local authorities in England and Wales referred 2.3 million debts to bailiffs in 2016/17.

Example: In 2016/17, Bassetlaw District Council instructed bailiffs to collect debts from individuals and businesses on 1,161 occasions – a decrease of 34% since 2014/15.

Example: In 2016/17, Leeds City Council instructed bailiffs to collect debts from individuals and businesses on 57,368 occasions – an increase of 115% since 2014/15.

Example: In 2016/17, London Borough of Lambeth instructed bailiffs to collect debts from individuals and businesses on 71,869 occasions – an increase of 324% since 2014/15**.
