A failure to double-check applicants’ personal information is resulting in thousands of fraudulent bank accounts being opened and operated, fraud experts have warned – with the result that banks’ innocent customers are then robbed.When pressed, even banks will admit their staff do not always verify documentation produced by people opening accounts. The proliferation of fake utility bills and other paperwork on the internet is compounding the problem.Fraud victim Derek Mackenzie discovered that the criminal responsible for stealing almost £8,000 from him had opened a TSB account with fake National Insurance paperwork which the bank failed to detect. The criminal gave an address which belonged to an unconnected couple.
