Police Officer Life Insurance

My uncle will be retiring next year. So now he is thinking about life insurance. In addition to any agency/department-sponsored life insurance, for those of you who have more above and beyond that, what companies are you using?
I have read this article and found that a lot of providers do not cover law enforcement.

If he's reached retirement age isn't it a bit late to be thinking of life insurance? Wouldn't it be prohibitively expensive at his age (I assume about 55) and doesn't he get a relatively generous pension anyway?

You aren't in the US are you? It's just your terminology, like "agency" and "law enforcement," sounds more American than British.* (I also find it hard to believe that British police officers have difficulty finding life cover).
