  • Query about probate for Hong Kong based assets

    Hi all,

I was hoping someone could help.

I am trying to execute my grandmothers will - she actually died over 20 years ago, but for whatever reason, my father did not carry out probate. Following his death a couple of years ago, I have now taken it upon myself to complete this.

My main question is whether I should:

    a) find a lawyer who is UK based but with a Hong Kong office
    b) find a lawyer based in HK

Initially A was more appealing, given that I am based in the UK and this would make meetings & communication easier but I am now wondering if this is even necessary. I am having difficulty finding a lawyer I am happy with, who has a HK office. If I was just trying to find a probate lawyer based in HK, this would be easier.

Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jack

      Hi Jack

Yep, you only need one thread.

Click H, should take you to Lawyers in Hong Kong, get several quotes, negotiate with the lowest.

thank you for the reply echat11

My actual question was about whether I should employ a UK Based lawyer (to interact with a HK lawyer) or should I go straight to a HK lawyer? (assuming this would be more cost effective).

Originally I had thought getting a UK based lawyer would be preferable, for meetings and time zone reasons, but wanted advice on whether this was the most sensible approach (cost wise) given that the HK office would be doing the work?

I would get quotes for both (UK/HK and HK), if anything goes wrong (unlikely because it's just admin) if you have a UK / HK firm you can take the complaint to the Legal Ombudsman.
